Yeast Infection: Introduction

A type of fungus, yeast is also known by the scientific term, Candida. Yeast usually grows on moist skin and in various parts of your body that have moisture including your mouth.

With an all time presence in your body, yeast can be unhealthy but for the fact that your body contains other bacteria populations that are beneficial to your health. These bacteria, along with your immune system, act to defend against damaging yeast activity.

What are the Yeast Infection Symptoms?

Generally, the presence of yeast fungus (candida) in your body does not cause symptoms and is more or less non-threatening to your health.

Symptoms include itching that causes redness in the affected part which results in a range of discomforts. The location and severity of your infection will generally decide the type of yeast infection signs that you display.

In women, vaginal yeast infection renders symptoms that include painful sexual intercourse and pain during urination. Additionally, it can also cause vaginal itching, irritation or a burning sensation in the vagina.

When you get symptoms of yeast infection in the form of oral thrush, the most evident sign are yellow white patches that are located on your mouth palate. Such patches can also be experienced on or below your tongue (often as curd-like sore formations).

These sores are also known to appear in the throat passage that can cause pain, making swallowing of liquid or food difficult.

Chronic yeast infection is known to linger for a lengthy term and can produce symptoms such as headache, anxiety, fatigue, irritation and bloating.

A weak immune system makes you more prone to yeast infections. Moreover, there may be episodes of recurrent bouts that appear from time to time.

Yeast infection symptoms can be easily treated if diagnosed early on. But if signs of yeast infection are ignored or left untreated, they can result in complications that can cause a range of discomfort and distress. In rare cases they have a potential of proving fatal.
