Vertigo: Introduction

Vertigo – a condition thatGirl holds her head as though objects are spinning around her makes things around you seem to spin in slow motion, a feeling which is totally virtual. You can easily confuse vertigo with other conditions such as dizziness or acrophobia, which are unrelated.

Vertigo can be a brief condition or a lifelong one. Often associated with problems in the inner ear, a person is at greater risk of vertigo with an increase in age. You can suffer from vertigo due to a number of ailments and body disorders. These include;

  • Ear infection/perforation
  • Motion sickness
  • Head injury
  • Chemical insults
  • Anemia and migraine
  • Viral infections (of the ear)
  • Brain tumor
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Anti-depressant medications (may cause vertigo)

What are the Vertigo Symptoms?

Although a myriad of factors can cause vertigo, the signs and symptoms are related to its cause that may differ in intensity and duration. A dramatic or sudden drop in blood pressure can make you experience symptoms of vertigo, as can an action such as standing up suddenly from an idle position.

Some Common Vertigo Signs and Symptoms:

  • Dizziness, a feeling of objects spinning around you
  • Nausea and vomiting that increase in intensity in case of a sudden vertigo attack
  • Excessive sweat
  • Substantial loss of concentration
  • Blurred vision, focusing on objects becomes difficult
  • Weakness and/or depression following an intense vertigo episode

Complications that can occur following vertigo include falls which may be injurious. As you lose ability to maintain balance at the time of suffering from vertigo symptoms you may lose your stability and become more susceptible to falls.

  • You may also start suffering from a weak memory.
  • You are unable to concentrate as you normally should.
  • You also suffer from a setback in your reasoning power.
  • Vertigo associated nausea and vomiting may result in weakness. You start disliking food and also face risk of dehydration and infection.
  • People with chronic cases of vertigo may suffer from double vision.

Vestibular imbalance is the most common disorder responsible for causing signs of vertigo. It is the imbalance occurring in the inner part of your ear. This results in out of step reflex actions which cause problems in performing daily activities.
