Prostate Cancer: Introduction

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the prostate, a gland located in the reproductive system of men. Prostate cancer commonly affects men after age fifty. However, symptoms or signs of prostate cancer are unlikely to appear in the early stages.

No specific causes are available, but risk factors can be referred to determine a cause. These factors include age, environment, heredity and diet.

What are the Prostate Cancer Symptoms?

With no prostate cancer signs that can come to notice in the initial stages, the disease develops gradually and silently. With slow progression, the tumor continues to grow in your prostate.

This may give you an enlarged urinary bladder (through cancerous growth) that can cause obstruction. In some cases this can lead to a complete blockage of urine flow.

Nonetheless, an enlargement of the prostate can be found in men without any cancerous development.

Moreover, you may experience symptoms of prostate cancer either singly or in combination.

Possible prostate cancer signs and symptoms:

• Pain on urination (or burning sensation)
• Frequent urination (especially at night)
• Difficulty in urination
• Unable to urinate
• Appearance of blood in urine (or even in semen)
• Pain during ejaculation
• Difficult penile erection
• Stiffness/pain in the lower back

These prostate cancer symptoms are found in other disease and conditions too. Nonetheless, evaluation of symptoms can be done by your doctor who may carry out tests to rule out presence of any cancerous developments.

Men who are past the age of fifty are more prone to prostate cancer risk. Increased levels of testosterone (male hormone) may quicken prostate cancer growth.

A family history of prostate cancer can also put you at an increased risk. Experts differ on whether acquired prostate cancer could evolve in a similar fashion as cancers from totally different factors.
