Heat Rash: Introduction

Heat rash occurs when your skin gets irritated and turns itchy due to excessive perspiration or sweating in a hot, humid environment. It is more of a symptom which causes affected part of your skin to red and to become blotched and swollen.

The rash commonly affects areas of your body that has over folding skin which cause friction with clothing. Rashes can develop on areas of the back and chest, hands and feet, beneath your armpits or in the groin.

What are the Heat Rash Symptoms?

Heat rash can erupt on your skin in the form of small bumps or spots which display as red patches on your skin. Mild rashes often occur due to blockage in the sweat glands of your skin that may sometimes resemble tiny blisters that can give you a prickly or stinging sensation.

Heat rash signs include small bumpy spots which may become flaky, scaly, or become pus filled. These rashes vary with location and extent that may occur in different areas of your body.

This skin condition mostly affects those living in hot and humid weather, commonly in summer season. But it can occur in other conditions too. Commonly found in small children and infants, it can develop in people of all ages.

Common symptoms for heat rash:

• Small, raised, mildly swollen, red-colored bumps
• A stinging or prickly sensation in the affected area
• Red spots in a clustered formation that may become itchy

Although, signs of heat rash can occur when your body is exposed to hot and humid weather for a considerable period of time, symptoms may take weeks or sometimes months to get displayed.

Generally, heat rash symptoms go off by themselves and need no treatment. But in children and some others who get affected, some form of treatment may become necessary.

Extended hot and humid weather conditions can cause heat rashes to linger for some time before they disappear altogether.

Treatment for symptoms of heat rash may be limited to topical creams and lotions to take care of itching, burning or swelling. Severe cases are treated with steroidal creams.
