Hearing Loss: Introduction

Hearing loss is a health condition when the ear is unable to detect sounds to a degree or completely. Hearing problems develop gradually, but rarely result in total deafness. Put simply, hearing loss is a gradual or rapid decrease in ability of your ears in listening to sounds.

Hearing loss may be of a permanent nature, or be severe or mild. Some are born with hearing problems but these may be rectified by following proper medical procedures for hearing loss.

What are the Hearing Loss Symptoms?

Hearing loss can occur suddenly or it may be gradual. Blood circulation problems in the body are often a cause for sudden hearing loss.

Hearing problems may be negligible or severe. Deafness may result following a severe hearing loss. Hearing loss can affect either a single or both the ears. Symptoms of hearing loss can occur as ear pain, fever, or a discharge from either ear.

Some of the hearing loss signs and symptoms:

• You get ear pain or there is ringing in your ears when you hear loud sounds or noise
• Hearing sounds of doorbells, door knocks, dropped objects or horns becomes difficult
• Hearing sounds as muffled
• Unable to hear people fully or clearly
• Request others to repeat what is being said

Symptoms and signs of hearing loss can depend on an underlying cause. Impaired hearing may be partial or temporal.

You may recognize sounds and noise as muffled. It may be a result of an ear infection that blocks sound which travel to your inner ear.

Your hearing loss signs may first be noticed by others. It may be someone from our family or your work place.

A continuous or daily noise exposure may damage your hearing gradually and as such hearing loss symptoms may go unnoticed up to a time when you have frequent hearing difficulties.

You may try avoiding social situations as it becomes difficult for you to follow any conversation in loud and noisy surroundings.
