Gum Disease: Introduction

Gum disease is a common infection occurring in gums that support and surrounding your teeth. The disease is through plaque formation characterized by presence of a thin biofilm (a coating or layer caused by bacteria).

Factors that lead to gum diseases include bad oral hygiene and bad lifestyle. These habits include smoking, usage of tobacco, some medications, obesity, diabetes, stress, poor nutrition, and a habit of grinding teeth.

What are the Gum Disease Symptoms?

At the onset, symptoms for this condition comprise of gum inflammation (gingivitis). If left untreated, it leads to advanced gum disease (periodontitis).

Gum disease make your gums turn red and swollen followed by pain. In some cases, they may start to bleed and also cause embarrassment by giving you bad breath.

In the mildest form, gum disease cause gums to turn red, suffer inflammation and bleed. As these symptoms cause minor discomfort such as bad breath, they often go unnoticed. Here are some signs and symptoms of gum disease;

• Redness and/or swelling of gums
• Bad mouth odor
• Space created by infection between gums and teeth
• Bleeding upon slight pressure on gums
• Pus formation between teeth and gums (cause for bad breath)

Untreated signs of gum disease may develop and advance below your gum surface.  This leads to severe plaque formation and production of toxins that cause gum irritation.

These toxins promote inward destruction and deterioration of bone tissue structure supporting your teeth suffering gradual decay.

The decay displays itself and is evident as gum disease symptoms. It forms with pockets of space in between teeth and gums when infection advances. If no timely remedial measures are taken, these infection prone pockets deepen.

A healthy balanced diet with fresh vegetables and fruits help promote gum and dental health as well as avoid gum infections.
