Enlarged Prostate: Introduction

Enlarged prostate (prostate is the reproductive gland in males) is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The walnut sized gland, responsible for passage of urine, grows bigger in size due to bladder or urinary problems. This condition is found only in males, especially in those who are aged.

What are the Enlarged Prostate Symptoms?

A number of symptoms exist, a majority of which are related to urinary problems. Nonetheless, it’s a fact that in all men suffering from BPH, half of them experience no symptoms of the disease.

Some Common Enlarged Prostate Signs and Symptoms:

• Having difficulty to start urination
• Not able to urinate
• Dribbling at the end of urination
• Not able to control or hold urine
• Difficulty in emptying the bladder
• Frequent urination (especially during night)
• A sudden and strong urge (to urinate)
• Experiences of weak stream while urinating
• Requiring effort to urinate

More Severe Signs and Symptoms for Enlarged Prostate:

• Nausea
• Fever and chills
• Lower back pain
• Urine disruption or obstruction
• Blood present in urine

The severity of obstruction or symptoms of enlarged prostate is not relative to the size of your prostate. In some cases the enlarged glands cause a minor obstruction with mild enlarged prostate symptoms.

If left untreated, severe BPH can lead to serious health complications over time. Problems with urination coupled with pressure on your bladder can cause urinary tract infections (UTI), inability to control urination, damage to kidney or bladder or bladder stones.

Talking with your doctor about your urinary problems is the first step that will help in identifying signs of enlarged prostate.

The symptoms related to BPH can only be identified by a doctor’s examination and will also help rule out possibilities of other conditions such as prostate cancer. If enlarged prostate is identified in its early stages, you lower your risk of developing serious complications.
