Eczema: Introduction

Eczema is a term used to describe a collection of chronic skin diseases. In Greek, the word eczema means ‘boiling over’. Commonly occurring in small children and infants, it can affect all age groups.

As it is a non-contagious skin condition, you cannot get infected through direct skin to skin contact with a person suffering from eczema. It is characterized by rashes (scaly), itching, peeling of the skin and blister formations that can affect any part of your body.

What are the Eczema Symptoms?

Due to shallow understanding of the causes for the disease, there is also an absence of a complete cure for symptoms of eczema.

Some of the common symptoms for eczema:

• Certain factors are understood to trigger eczema. Allergy to body care products such as toiletries or cosmetics, artificial clothing material and stress are some of the known factors that can act as triggers causing signs of eczema.
• Eczema can also get triggered when your skin comes into contact with specific detergents or soaps. Allergens found in the environment can also act as possible triggers for eczema outbreak.
• Eczema symptoms can differ among affected individuals and vary with the type, severity and location of the disease.
• The first among evident signs associated with eczema start in the form of intense itching. A rash appears on the affected part as the disease develops. A persistent eczema rash can be rather annoying and is often stubborn to treatment.
• Commonly, eczema occurs on parts of your body such as neck, face, inside the elbows, knees or ankles which may cause severe itching.
• You have to take prescription medicines over a period of time before experiencing any useful result.
• Blisters (fluid filled tiny sacs) are also common symptoms which make an appearance on skin surface. These are inflamed formations that cause skin redness and differ in color and size (vary as per eczema type).

You may also experience more severe complaints such as blisters, oozing, dry and scaly skin. Eczema signs and symptoms are also known to appear briefly when caused due to triggers that often subside in a couple of hours.
