Conjunctivitis: Introduction

Conjunctivitis, also known as ‘pink eye’, is the inflammation of tiny vessels in your eyeball. Children are more prone to get this eye condition but is found affecting adults too.

Conjunctivitis initially infects one eye causing mild itching. Due to its highly contagious nature, rubbing the infected eye quickly spreads the infection to the other eye as well.

What are the Conjunctivitis Symptoms?

Conjunctivitis signs appear two to three days after infection (the infection is building up in this period). Symptom of conjunctivitis may differ among individuals depending on the causes.

Although highly contagious, conjunctivitis poses no serious threat to your eyes, causes minor discomfort and is temporary in nature.

A list of Symptoms for Conjunctivitis:

• Pain and irritation in the eye/s
• Dryness and itching in one or both eyes
• A pink, light-red colored eyeball
• Excessive tears
• A burning sensation in the eyes
• Red watery eyes with discharge
• Swelling in one or both eyes
• Discharge from eyes that is green, yellow, or clear
• Crusting at the edge of eyelids
• Eyelashes stick together on waking, difficult to open
• Blurring of vision
• A deceptive feeling of foreign particle/s in the eyes

Moreover, conjunctivitis is categorized into three types; allergic conjunctivitis, bacterial conjunctivitis and viral conjunctivitis.

Bacterial conjunctivitis infections type occurs when bacteria enter into your eye. The bacteria could transfer through contact with infected hands, cushions or pillows or maybe air borne. A bacterial infection is indicated by a thick green discharge from your eyes.

Viral conjunctivitis is associated with cold, flu and cough, and is caused by a virus. It is often characterized by a running nose, a sore throat, and symptoms of cold and flu. There is no cure for viral conjunctivitis and symptoms are relieved through medications.

Allergic conjunctivitis happens when pollen, dust, smoke, chemicals or animal dander enter your eyes. The conjunctiva reacts with the allergens and is a primary cause of allergic conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis symptoms usually fade after a week, and are more prominent during the cold and flu season. Treatment should begin at the very first signs of infection.
