Blood Clots: Introduction

Blood clot or thrombus is a defense mechanism triggered by your body to stop loss of blood following an injury. The blood cells, together with a sticky substance called fibrin, form a coating that turns into a semi-solid state, known as a blood clot.

Due to some conditions there can be harmful formation of blood clots in vessels or organs of your body. These blood clots bear a potential of causing serious health conditions.

What are the Blood Clot Symptoms?

The severity and signs for blood clots largely depend on their location in your body. A blood clot can remain connected to walls of a blood vessel without causing any harm and it can dissolve or break down on its own.

Nonetheless, the clot can break free and get stuck in blood vessels that are small in size located throughout your body. This blocks the supply of oxygen from reaching specific body parts and cause serious health problems. Here are some symptoms of blood clots;

If there is blood clot in your lung, you may:

• Have chest pain that is sharp
• Experience rapid heart rate
• Suffer from shortness of breath
• Fell lightheaded or dizzy (though rare, you may suffer from fainting)
• Have mild fever
• Cough up blood

Blood clots that can form in the arteries of your extremities:

• You may suffer from pain that is sudden
• You may get pain in you joints
• There may be swelling
• Your arms and/or legs may feel warm
• You may experience tenderness or discoloration

Moreover, blood clots forming inside arteries and veins can obstruct flow of blood. Such obstruction can result in a heart attack or stroke. Blood clots that form following a surgical procedure or traumatic injury can also turn life-threatening.

Blood clot signs related to your brain or head:

• Confusion
• Headaches
• Speech difficulty
• Loss of coordination
• Seizures
• Blindness
• Paralysis

Symptoms for blood clots in the abdomen:

• Abdominal or stomach pain that is severe
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea

Treatment for blood clot symptoms depend on whether it has occurred in your artery or in your vein. The other factors taken into consideration are; general health of the patient, the location and size of the clot.
