What is Angina?

Angina, in simple terms, is a condition where blood flow to the heart is inadequate resulting in chest pain (it cannot be termed as a heart attack).

Angina occurs when one or more of the coronary blood vessels contracts. This contraction may be due to several factors and health issues. Symptoms are often misdiagnosed with heart attack; this diagnostic delay proves to be fatal for life ending up with other severe coronary diseases.

Narrowing of blood vessels, arteries can occur due to deposition of insoluble fats, proteins or high cholesterol. This artery carries oxygen along with blood, to the heart. When the heart pumps faster, more oxygen is needed and artery blockage restricts the oxygenated blood flow causing pain in chest.

Causes of Angina

Narrowing of the blood vessels never happens overnight. Uncontrolled blood pressure mechanism develops low or fast heart beats causing needle point pain in chest due to irregular pressure of blood on heart.

Causes for angina include plaque formation also known as atherosclerosis. Plaque hardens arteries and narrows the flow of blood through it or it may form blood clots.

In both situations the oxygenated blood flow is hindered, causing pain in the chest. Early stage medications have shown satisfactory results in plaque reduction.

Probable causes of angina and other heart disease include alcohol, smoking and prohibited drugs consumed when an individual wants relief from depression and stress.

Symptoms of Angina

There are no visible symptoms associated with angina like cough, fever, infection or injury. Slow but constant pinching pain in chest is a prime symptom of the disease. Chest pain in angina may slowly extend to arms.

This pain also spreads to the abdominal region, confusing its diagnosis. Acidic sensation is felt in chest region along with vomiting, sweat and dizziness.
